I remember this sometimes happened when I did not "exported" K_BASE,
but only set it in .profile.
Could also have to do with the .profile not being executed. Does
echo $K_BASE
give you the right answer?
if so, you could probably use
make K_BASE=$K_BASE
but there should be another simpler way to make the environment vars
recognizable by make...
