- Multimedia Information Retrieval Project -

The Spanish consortium MAVIR at Computer Science Department of UNED and UPM
partners,
is seeking a Research Scientist (Ph.D. required) to work on Multimedia
Information Retrieval models and systems, starting as soon as possible,
preferably first November 2008.

The ideal candidate is a Computational Linguist or Computer Science engineer
with an interest in the computational semantics and pragmatics of Information
Retrieval (IR) systems, with experience in formally-inspired and/or
statistical/machine-learning approaches to natural language processing and IR.
The position requires a Ph.D. in computational linguistics, natural language processing, artificial intelligence, cognitive science, or a related field. Applicants should have a demonstrated capacity to define and implement a research plan, and to conduct individual and collaborative research consonant with the Multimedia Information Retrieval projects underway at MAVIR Consortium universities (www.mavir.net).

Current research into Multimedia Information retrieval employs a variety of techniques, including symbolic and stochastic, theory and data-driven. Proficiency in multiple approaches relevant to MAVIR application areas (bank and health) will be highly valued, as will an ability to participate in implementation.

The successful candidate will work with faculty, postdoctoral, and student researchers, performing novel research and developing core infrastructure for multimedia information retrieval for a range of tasks and applications. Responsibilities will include supervising student research assistants, attendance to research meetings and conferences and participating in proposal-preparation to attract new funding.

The MAVIR consortium consists of about fifteen people from five universities,
and is involved in theoretical studies, applications and technology
transference to commercial enterprises.

The position is initially for 1 year.

Applicants should submit a letter of application and a full resume or
curriculum vitae with names and email addresses of at least two references.
