Hi all,

Following are the details for this week's AIIS
(http://l2r.cs.uiuc.edu/~cogcomp/aiis/)
talk.

When: Friday, Oct 22, 2-3 pm.

Where: 3405 SC.

Speaker: Prof. Angelia Nedich

Title: Random Algorithms for Convex Minimization Problems

Abstract: New applications in communication and control networks, as well as
large
data sets processing have given rise to optimization problems with large
and/or
dynamically changing constraints. In this talk, we will consider such an
instance
where the constraint sets are unknown but they can be observed and learned
over
time. We will discuss some algorithmic approaches for solving such problems
with
convex structure. The algorithms rely on random projections on the constraint
sets,
as the sets are learned. We investigate convergence properties of the
algorithms and
also provide some error bounds on the algorithms’ performance both in time
and
asymptotic.

Bio: Angelia Nedich received her B.S. degree from the University of
Montenegro
(1987) and M.S. degree from the University of Belgrade (1990), both in
Mathematics.
She received her Ph.D. degrees from Moscow State University (1994) in
Mathematics
and Mathematical Physics, and from Massachusetts Institute of Technology in
Electrical Engineering and Computer Science (2002). She has been at the BAE
Systems Advanced Information Technology from 2002-2006. In Fall 2006, as
Assistant Professor, she has joined the Department of industrial and
Enterprise
Systems Engineering at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, USA.
She is
the recipient of the NSF CAREER Award 2008 in Operations Research for her
work in
distributed multi-agent optimization.

Her general interest is in optimization including fundamental theory, models,
algorithms, and applications. Her current research interest is focused on
large-scale
optimization, ergodicity and consensus, distributed in-network optimization
and their
applications

Hoping to see you all there.
Best,
Rajhans
