The 2012 Data Sciences Summer Institute is proud to announce, as part of our Expert Speaker Series:

Authorship Attribution and Computational Stylistics

Shlomo Argamon, Illinois Institute of Technology

Tuesday, June 19, 1pm

2405 Siebel Center

Abstract:

As text classification and information retrieval methods have matured, and as the quantity of digitized text available has exploded, it has become feasible to determine text authorship by computational means. The applications of this technology range from law enforcement and counterterrorism to literary scholarship and plagiarism detection. In this seminar, I will first explain how text classification and computational linguistics are applied to determine authorship of an anonymous text from a set of known candidates. Time permitting, I will then discuss solution of more advanced problems: profiling author characteristics, such as gender and age, verifying if a text is by a specific known author, and detecting plagiarism.

Bio:

Shlomo Argamon is an associate professor of computer science at Illinois Institute of Technology. His research focuses on developing computational methods for style-based analysis of natural language using machine learning and shallow lexical semantic representations, exploring applications in intelligence analysis, forensic linguistics, biomedical informatics, and humanities scholarship. Prof. Argamon’s current research work includes extracting structured representations of opinions from text, authorship profiling of anonymous texts, and evidence-based analysis of the medical literature, from large amounts of textual data. He is particularly interested in elucidating the relationships among linguistic structures, individual reasoning, and social context. Prof. Argamon has published over 100 scientific articles on machine learning and computational linguistics, and is the co-editor of Computational Methods in Counterterrorism (Springer, 2009) and The Structure of Style (Springer, 2010).

Data Sciences Summer Institute (DSSI):

The Data Sciences Summer Institute is a 6-week long program in Data Science areas for graduate and undergraduate students from around the country.  This summer program (May 20 – June 30, 2012) consists of an intensive class in the mathematical foundations of Data Sciences, tutorials on advanced Data Science topics and collaborative research projects.  The DSSI weaves together mathematical foundations, applications, and research.

The mission of the Data Sciences Summer Institute is to develop diverse human resources to enhance the scientific research, education, and government workforce in Data Science disciplines.  This program is funded by the Department of Homeland Security’s Center of Excellence – Command, Control, and Interoperability Center for Advanced Data Analysis (CCICADA) at the UIUC’s Multimodal Information Access & Synthesis (MIAS) Center, and by a grant from Yahoo!
