In Spring 2016, Prof. Lane Schwartz will offer a course in Statistical
Machine Translation (LING 506).

Skype Translator translates spoken conversations between Chinese, Spanish,
English, and more in real-time using the latest neural network techniques in
deep learning. Google Translate instantly translates text between 90
different languages, and offers real-time spoken and image translation on
mobile devices.

This class will show you how these systems work, covering building blocks
from linguistics, natural language processing, machine learning, and deep
learning.

Students will learn how to build a competitive machine translation system,
and will have the opportunity to be a co-author on the University of Illinois
submission to the 2016 Conference on Statistical Machine Translation (WMT)
shared translation task.
