Postdoctoral Researcher in Machine Translation, Language Technologies and Machine Learning

 

The University of Saarland (Germany) is looking for a

·        Post-Doctoral Researcher in Data-Driven Machine Translation.

Key responsibilities: research and development of novel technologies concentrating on

·        machine translation for cross language information retrieval (CLIR)

·        statistical and neural models of machine translation

·        integration of data and machine learning driven approaches with existing knowledge resources

·        research publication in top-tier conferences and journals

·        identification of funding opportunities and engagement in proposal writing

·        contribution to teaching and supervision

·        administrative work associated with the programme of research

Requirements:

·        PhD in computer science, natural language processing or computational linguistics

·        Strong background in data-driven and statistical machine translation

·        Strong background in machine learning, neural nets and deep learning

·        Excellent problem solving skills

·        Independent and creative thinking

·        Excellent programming skills

·        Excellent communication skills

·        Excellent command of written and oral English (German, French, Spanish are an additional advantage)

The post will be for 3 years. Salary range TV-L 13: 3.438-4.962 euro p.m. (gross) depending on experience.

The research is funded by the Leibnitz Foundation, grant no. SAW-2016 -ZPID-2. The successful applicant will report to Prof. Josef van Genabith (Chair of Translation-Oriented Language Technologies, University of Saarland; Scientific Director for Multilingual Technologies and joined Head of the Language Technology Lab, DFKI) and Prof. Stephan Busemann (Deputy Director Language Technology Lab, DFKI).

Working environment:

The post will be located at the University of the Saarland. Successful applicants will join the Translation-Oriented Language Technology Lab (TLT, University of Saarland) and become an associated member of the Multilingual Technology Lab (MLT) at DFKI (the German Research Center for Artificial Intelligence).

Both labs are led by Prof. Josef van Genabith and offer the opportunity of working in international teams that combine excellent research with innovative applications. The TLT Lab at the University of Saarland partners in EU projects (EXPERT Marie Curie ITN http://expert-itn.eu ) and large-scale basic research activities (IDEAL Information Density and Linguistic Encoding, SFB 1102, http://www.sfb1102.uni-saarland.de ) funded by the German Science Foundation DFG. DFKI is one of the leading AI-research institutes worldwide, with several sites in Germany. The MLT lab partners in European and industry funded research projects in all areas of Language Technologies (including multilingual text analytics and search, the multi-lingual web, machine translation, human-robot communication, speech).  MLT leads the H2020 European Research project QT21 (http://www.qt21.eu ) and the CEF funded ELRC project (http://elrc.tilde.com ). The MLT Lab belongs to the DFKI site on the campus of the Saarland University. Saarland University has exceptionally strong Computer Science and Computational Linguistics departments, two Max Plank Institutes in Computer Science, an Excellence Cluster in Multimodal Computing and Interaction (https://www.mmci.uni-saarland.de ). and several International Doctoral and Master Programmes in Computer Science and Computational Linguistics.

Geographical environment:

Saarbrücken (http://www.saarbruecken.de/en ) is the capital of Saarland with approximately 190,000 inhabitants, a pleasant size. It is located right in the heart of Europe and is the cultural center of the border region of Germany, France and Luxembourg. Some of the closest larger cities are Trier, Nancy, Kaiserslautern, Mannheim and Karlsruhe and Frankfurt. Paris can be reached by train within just under 2 hours.  Living costs in and around Saarbrücken are moderate in comparison with other large cities in Germany and elsewhere in Europe.

Starting date and duration:

Preferred starting date is July 1st, 2016.  The position is available for a fixed term until June 30th, 2019, with opportunities for extension depending on performance and future funding.
