2 Ph.D. positions in Software Engineering - University of Groningen, The
Netherlands
====================================================================================

About the SEARCH Group
----------------------
The Software Engineering & Architecture (SEARCH) group at the University
of Groningen is committed to advancing the state of the art in the field
of software architecture. The group aims to achieve that by carrying out
joint research projects with universities, research institutes, and
industrial partners, thus combining academic know-how with industrial
practice. The research topics of the SEARCH group include software
architecture design and evaluation, software product lines,
architectural patterns and pattern languages, architecture-centric
evolution, dynamic architectures, service-centric architectures and
architectural knowledge.

The SEARCH group offers 2 vacancies for Ph.D. candidates
--------------------------------------------------------
Area: Software Architecture and Patterns
Number of vacancies: 2
Code: SWA-PAT1 and SWA-PAT2
Project description: Carry out research in the field of pattern-based
software architecture with respect to design, evaluation and evolution.
A project on pattern-based software architecting is being started in the
University of Groningen. The tasks of the two Ph.D. candidates will be,
among others, to mine and author architectural patterns, establish
relationships between patterns, synthesize pattern languages and explore
the latest trends in pattern theory like pattern sequencing. Furthermore
the patterns and pattern languages are aimed to be used within methods
and tools that support architectural design, quality attribute
evaluation and software evolution. The research results will be
validated in close collaboration with industrial partners like the
Software Architecture group at Philips Research, Eindhoven and local
companies and organizations. The research work in the two Ph.D.
positions may be coupled with each other in order to provide motivating
research partnerships and more effective group results.
Location: University of Groningen, Groningen

discipline, preferably with a strong background in software engineering.
- You are expected to have an excellent academic record (list of
examination marks from your university degree) and be curious, creative
and ambitious.
- You should be able to write scientific articles and reports (proven by
your graduation thesis or another comparable report) and be fluent in
English.

team player, open-minded and actively participate in knowledge sharing.

Conditions of agreement
-----------------------
The University of Groningen offers outstanding candidates a Ph.D.
fellowship and an accompanying stipend. The fellowship is for a period
of four years which should result in the Ph.D. defense of the candidate.
The stipend starts from about € 1390 gross (the candidate has to take
care for tax - about 3% - and health insurance) per month in the first
year and will be adjusted to general price movements once a year. After
one year, the performance of the candidate will be evaluated to decide
whether there is sufficient progress to expect a successful completion
of the Ph.D. thesis within the remaining three years.
A training program is part of the agreement to support the Ph.D.
candidates in their professional and personal development as well as
their career planning. You and your supervisor will make up a plan for
the additional education and supervising that you specifically need. The
University of Groningen strives to offer an aspiring environment for
research providing generous technical and financial support in order to
motivate young researchers.

How to apply
------------
